ask away...

i need to start this post by honestly apologizing for not always answering my emails. i am really bad at it... it seems that when i am so busy and cant seem to do it all that is the first thing i neglect and truly, i am sorry. i always get the sweetest emails from people who read my blog, it means the world to me and i feel really lame that i haven't always been great about writing back... in fact i got a nasty comment once because i didn't write a woman back and she was offended and wanted to give me the what for. so sorry.

so i was thinking i would do a little q&a... ask anything from photography to where i got something to how i did something, etc. you can leave a comment or email me and i'll do a post in a couple of days answering them all, cross my heart.

and if i don't get any questions will someone at least ask a courtesy question so i don't feel too bad.

Hi Amy.
I'm so glad you are doing this:)
Your bedding, your little girls bedding, and the yellow and white sculped rug, custom, homemade, or store bought?
I love them all!!!!

hi Amy! I'm writing from Rome (we're on vacation) and I've been thinking about your beautiful pictures you took while you were in Italy... anyway!

I am wondering if there is something specific that you did to take the leap from an amateur to a professional? Was it a lens upgrade? Photoshop? You can see how your work gets consistently better and better and I've sort of hit a wall, so I'm just curious. Thanks for doing this!

Ooh fun.

Favorite lenses. What's your very, very favorite? And do you use filters or hoods? And do you always use PhotoShop?

It looks as though everyone else is already asking some of my questions re: photography. I've seen that you like some indie folk-ish music, and I'm curious as to how you discover new artists. Also, what is your favorite piece in your home(which could be a very difficult question)? And where is your favorite place to find treasures for your home? - specifically textiles. I really love the patterns on your bedding! Sorry - lots of questions. :)

If you could only use one lens from now on to take pictures of your girls, which lens would it be?

Hi Amy! Yay for q and a! So how do you get your blogger photos so darn big? Mine always get shrinky dinked! Also, any tips for shooting kids indoors, I'm just starting to learn manual mode of my D40 and the kids are always a blur!

Thanks!

I have a question - what got you into photography? How long have you been doing it? Any any formal training?

You are amazing!!

Thanks!

What do you think is better getting an expensive lens or upgrading your camera? Do you feel your photography was brought to a new level when you bought your 5d or do you think you took just as good pictures with your old camera? Why the 85mm? Which lens do you use the most? I noticed too that when people try to right click on your pictures they can't save or copy them, how can I do that on my blog? (I promise I wasn't trying to steal any pics) thanks for being so open to answering questions

I've been wondering where you got your black and white old fashioned style couch that is in your sitting room. Did you re-upholster it yourself, or did it come that way? I LOVE it! And I love your style of photography too.

Hi Amy,

I've been perusing your blog (and several others) because the beautiful photography inspires me. I've been very busy with grad school in the past years, and since I will be done with that very soon (yay!), I am contemplating taking photography lessons.

Do you have any advice on what to do first, when you are a beginner (which camera to buy, take a class or learn from books, etc.)? Thank you very, very much!

yesssssssss! i love Q&A on blogs!!
maybe because i'm full of questions!

1. do you ever use skin softening software? or do you soften skin by hand? and if so, what/or how.

2. do you ever use photoshop actions? and if so, what are your favorites?

3. do you have any other favorite photoshop tips and tricks?

4. can you talk a little about your pricing? how much you charge for a session and what you started out charging for sessions in the very beginning?

5. when you sell prints to customers (or do you just give the files on disc?) who do you use to make your prints?

i cannot wait to read your follow up post with the answers to everyone's great questions!! did i mention i LOVE blog Q&A posts?!?!

thanks!

i have a random question, how did you pick your daughters names? they're so unique + lovely. are they named after some one? or just names you have always liked?

Your style, to my untrained eye, seems the perfect mix of mid-century modern and vintage/eclectic. How do you mix the pieces and colors you do? Do you have a grand scheme? Do you just pick things you like and they happen to all look fabulous together? And how does one transform her house from one style (mine is very Pottery Barn classic circa mid-2000's) into another style, such as yours, piece by piece, without it looking like a garage sale?

Would you come decorate my house?

That's not really my question, but it would be so awesome!

My question is what is your workflow like. You unload your images and then what? Do you use a PC or Mac? If Mac, do you use Aperture or iPhoto to organize?

I love your photography & style!!!

Fun! Your blog is one of my favorites.

How do you make it so people can't click on your picture to make it bigger without using flickr?

How do you manage to pair patterns + prints together in your home decor (and please say it can be learned)?

Hi Amy. I was just wondering what are your favorite stores or places that inspire you the most?

Also, kind of lame, but I have been looking for the cardboard/recycled envelopes you used on Ann's invites? So far no luck, so I was hoping you could say where you found them? :)

Thanks!

(Oh. Sorry, this isn't my blog id, it is my husbands! My name is Tiffany :))

No seriously, do you think you are going to answer these questions on your blog or to the individual person? You got some good questions that I would like to know the answers to.

Have a great day!

Everybody is asking the same questions I have! I'd love to learn:

1. how do you get your photos bigger on your blog?

2. How do you like your 16-35 lens? I'm thinking about renting one for our upcoming vacation so I can get some good wide angle shots in tight places, like inside the car, around the table, etc. Do you feel like it distorts faces?

Thanks, Amy!

You seem to get so much done for a mama. Where do you find the time? I'd love to hear how a typical day or week in your home goes.

What other websites or blogs do you find inspiration from?

pretty sure my questions have been answered...
i LOVE your style of decorating. i'm not sure what to call it but it's fresh, unique and things go "together" without "going together" - if that makes sense. do you shop consignment stores, estate sales? i'm in SLC and would love to know where you snag some of your finds.
your photography is great. i'm also having a hard time jumping from amaeteur to more. how did you decide to set prices?
i would love to know about protecting your photos too.
thanks for doing this.

This is a great post and I hope I am not too late. It looks like this post is going to keep you busy with all the questions! You are so sweet to be so willing to answer.

Here are some questions I would love to read about.

1. What is your favorite B & W conversion tool? I am in search of a great way to turn my photos into a nice, clean, crisp B & W. I also love the Br & W of your post 'I often go walking' That's a nice one. How did you do that?

2. I need to start shooting in RAW, but just haven't taken the time to do it. Do you shoot in RAW? If so, I would love to read a post about how to shoot & edit in Photoshop.

Thanks!!
