question...

we have decided to cloth diaper this time around. mostly because both of my girls had terrible diaper rashes constantly no matter how often we changed and we are hoping to remedy that with baby boy by cloth diapering. also, we are really working hard on reducing our carbon footprint (really need to see what we can do about the big suv i drive around in!)

anyway, i have been researching like crazy and i for sure want to go the pocket route with the option of disposable inserts as well as washable. the two i seem to keep coming back to are charlie banana and flip. please let me know if you use either or have used both and what you prefer?!? or if you use another brand and totally love it...?

thanks :)

I found this post from young house love the most helpful:

http://www.younghouselove.com/2010/08/the-much-requested-cloth-diaper-post/

Im having a baby in about 2 weeks, and we are trying out bum genius all in one's, and G diapers wich have both washable and disposable inserts. I will let you know how it goes, but from all of the reviews I have read, and people I have talked to the bum genius seem to work best, with the least leaks, and everyone seems to like just throwing it in the wash instead of taking it apart like you have to with pocket inserts.

i use bum genius all in ones and love them, but if you want both disposable and washable inserts then check out gro baby. my SIL uses those and likes them. i tried out g diapers and my little girl always squirted out the side. good luck - i bet you'll find you really like using cloth diapers!

We use prefolds with a snappi and Thirsties covers as well as BumGenius all-in-ones. Prefolds for at home and BumGenius for when we're out and about. Have used them since our daughter was 2 weeks old and now she's 17 months old. Have loved using cloth from the start! Also, we use PlanetWise wetbags for storing dirties in between washes. These bags are great and come in different sizes. Have fun making your decisions...cloth diapers are so much cuter than disposables :)

Ok, so here it is for the second try. I seriously hope it does not go into universe but will stick to comments :)

I clothdiapered all kids, and LOVED it. I still use disposables here and there ( "the green kind" ). BUt really rarely.

I found over the years of experience, that most big names are not nearly as good as smaller companies. I absolutely loved the diapers from Righteous Baby - unfortunately, due to newly passed laws, she is unable to run a company full out , but will still do custom orders if you email her. She uses organic bamboo velour - absolute LUXE for the baby bum . I NEVER had a diaper rash and the soft diapers are absolutely wonderful. Absorbancy is wonderful too while there is NO bulk. That is a big deal for me : I want the cute baby bum to put on cute clothes :) With some diapers I fount that to be... ummm... not compatible.

Also, in my experience, the "leak proof" pocket diapers leak more then not. THe ones that DIDN'T leak are the ones that have the
'ruffle' at the legs - things stay put where they belong. And fitteds with the cover over it worked the best for us.

I never believed it , until I tried, but 100% wool covers are THE best. They honestly don't leak. AND don't stink. At all. Etsy has a few really cute makers, that I ordered mine from ( one is from Canada, and is absolutely awesome), so, I highly recommend at least one-two for nights.

Righteous Baby makes the "shells" - as she calls them - 100% felt wool, lined with wool knit , linolized : as a result you get nearly a bullet proof cover ( from leaks :)), and very cute one too - looks NOTHING like a typical diaper cover. She does appliques on them too. I had her make some girly cute ones for the summer, and kept my little baby in the cover + babylegs. Looked sute and worked awesome. I had half manhattan ask where I got her "bottoms" :).

Alrighty - this is in a nutshell, but hopefully it gives you the idea :) Let me know if you have more questions :)

In CDing two kiddos, we've used all kinds of pockets and other dipes. I now swear by Thirsties covers + prefolds at home (cute and pretty economical; no leaks EVER). On the go, BumGenius pockets are easy. Why prefolds, besides being economical and low maintenence? Our kids tend to be rashy too, and prefolds wash up more thoroughly, holding onto less bacteria and fungus. If you have to use rash ointment or medicine, it is much easier to strip prefolds, or to keep a few set aside for use with ointments. Whatever dipes you choose, Rockin' Green detergent is great for stripping rash-causing residues. Best wishes!

Forgot to mention that we've used disposable g diaper inserts with our Thirsties covers, and they work fine. This is a good option when a rash flares up and we have to use cream.
I know we don't know each other, but don't hesitate to email if you want more info. I've weeded through a lot of products and info in five years of CDing!

My kids have really sensitive skin and get/got rashes really bad. I don't use cloth diapers, but I do use Nature Babycare diapers. They are THE best! They are totally biodegradable/compostable and they are really soft on their skin- my kids never get rashes with them! Also, they are way absorbent and my kids NEVER leak with them (even going like 10hrs+ straight thru the night) so that's a huge plus!

hi amy! have you decided what you want to go with? we also have decided to go cloth this time around. i have a girlfriend that has two in diapers and swears by the flip system...but i too somehow always end up at charlie banana...just curious if you have found out anymore information in your research:) how exciting that you are having a sweet boy...i'm sure he will be more than loved with you and your little girlies to help you ;)

I researched like crazy too (40 plus hours) and for my first baby, we went with G Diapers + cloth inserts (the chinese prefolds worked great, or hemparoos) BUT then I realized, mid-way through baby #2 that the velcro wears out and you have to deal with different sizes.

So...after MORE research and trials - the FLIP is DA BOMB! Totally! Love it!

And you've GOT to try Charlie's Soap - it's the BEST!
